My Great Grandfather fought in France during WW1. He actually wrote some memoirs of his time there & they’re pretty harrowing. In particular he speaks of being a member of a mortar supply squad of 4 or 5 guys. Their job was to run from the mortar position to the supply depot & back carrying bags of shells, while dodging the enemy fire etc. On one run, one of their squad gets picked off by a sniper but the rest make it back to the mortar position. They start unloading the ammo & he discovers that his bag has a bullet hole in it & inside the bag they found the deformed bullet which had hit one of the shells.
Right there is a moment in time, where if it had played out slightly differently I and everyone that I know on one side of my family tree, simply would not exist.
