How To Beat 400 Games In 4.5 Years

TLDR, my process works just fine : ]

I’ve been slowly making an effort at the backlog the last few years, but this year is the first time I put true emphasis on it (12 so far + regulars/endless stuff). Didn’t read the whole article thing but its more or less the approach many take here. “Have a community to talk about the games you’ve beaten” seems to be one of his main points. And I agree, its fun to chat about games with someone. Between the gamer challenge and reviews. Fun to read others and post your own. Though, I get lazy about that second part…

The way I see it. There’s no foreseeable end to games being made. So all I can do is keep adding to my list as I hear about each new one. All the games I’m aware of that I think I might want to play are all written down. So just keep playing and beating is all I do. It’s all anyone can do. It’s not like some of the games will disappear. ALL the games are available via the internet and so will all games to come. No need for some crazy scientific elaborate plan. Just play and beat, rinse repeat. Not a hard feat… isn’t that neat? Under a cow you’ll find a tit… I know at least one guy named Pete… Making burritos, what a treat! One of the ingredients is tasty meat… I’m currently on a seat… So now my burrito I shall eat… cold outside, turn up the heat…that’s how we roll on this street…

gord0 I can’t speak for the article dude, but I’m definitely not after some sort of endgame to games or whatever. I never want it to end!

The main reason I started the Gamer Challenge was to motivate myself to start clearing games and it did work wonderfully for the first three or so months. My main problem lies to having extremely limited time or in cases such as the one I am currently in, away from home and away from my PC where I am unable to play any games.

WoW definitely plays a factor as well to this, as this delightful MMORPG takes way too much time. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t start Elder Scrolls Online or Final Fantasy XIV, games I am really looking forward to play.

I will just take my sweet time and punch a lot of needed gaming time with various ways. For example, I will start streaming, that might be fun while trying to clear games.

Streaming would detract from proper play. The pressure to entertain would ruin a lot of games for you.

Luckily, I have no problems with this kind of stuff. As mentioned in the article, I use howlongtobeat.com to organize my time when it comes to beating games. It’s helpful, accurate and that site is the main reason why I was able to 100% almost 100 games on steam. That’s like 50% of my Steam library haha
But then again, I have a lot of free time as my day is basically 25% work, 30% studying and the rest is gaming.

I rarely ever beat games. I tend to play more roleplaying games, that are designed to just go on and on. I treat them as more of a pastime that I enjoy, until get tired of that one or see another one that catches my interest.

So you play mmos then? Offline RPGs all have endings…or I wouldn’t play them.

gord0 MMOs have endings as well

Realized I was too busy trolling gord0 to throw in my two cents (though he didn’t take the bait).

I say games are meant for entertainment. I have a lot of games to choose from and can play and have fun (hopefully). I don’t really care that I have a bunch of games in my library. Nice to have options!

Not that I’ve ever encountered… Lineage 2, Aion, Tera, Star Trek Online…

gord0 All of these have endings. It’s just a problem no one reads the quests after you beat the last boss.

The problem is the games keep getting expanded. Meanwhile we’re lucky to get story dlc in an offline rpg and all dlc usually stops within a year of the original release.

gord0 That’s true. But the expansions come 2 or 3 years after the previous one so I guess that’s enough time for you to finish the main quests. Also, usually, the expansions have nothing to do with the previous story and it contains a whole new world with whole new storyline. Basically a new game. It’s up to you if you want to go through it.

The only problem I have with MMOs is usually that the games are insanely time consuming. In Aion, it takes you at least 2 months just to reach the level cap. So imagine playing a game for 2 months just to get to the interesting part of the storyline haha
Guild Wars 2 has done it right, though. Every 10 levels you have a story mission. In 80 hours, you reached the end game and you finished the storyline, plus, you have good enough gear to start a new story with the “new” expansion. And ANet is releasing the expansion every 1000 years or so. So it leaves you enough time to go through your Steam library twice before a new expansion is released haha

Meh. To me mmo = git good and dominate in pvp. Fuck the story. That’s where the thrills are. Especially in L2 where anyone can attack anyone. None of that faction crap or arena only shit.

When I want a story, I play offline games…which is pretty much all I play these days. Takes too much time and effort to play successfully in an mmo.
