Kingdom Come: Deliverance (13 hour thoughts)

Okay, so I had been waiting for this game for what feels like forever, after reading some, not so pleasant, articles relating to this game, I caved and decided to try it out for myself. Here are my thoughts, kinda sorta broken down into a few categories.

Overview
VERY happy with my purchase
You are NOT a combat god, you’re a regular dude with no combat experience. The game makes sure you know that.
You get better at things as you do them, so talk smack, pick flowers, ride horses, and OH YES, DRINK!
Soundtrack is okay, but ambient audio is, imo, fantastic.
Basic needs are easily managed and dont feel intrusive
Most of the backlash I’ve heard about performance and bugs, I’ve not encountered. Just turn shaders and shadows down.
Very immersive.
Character looks like a foot.

RIG:
GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 @ 3000Mhz, an i5-6600k @ Stock, with this game running on a SSD.

Performance:
MY current in game settings are a mix of very high, high, and medium (Shadows & Shaders) and I’m managing to keep roughly 50-60 fps at most times in the game. I haven’t noticed many mugs, besides a bit of clipping, repeat dialogue, and one reappearing guy who wants to duel me, over and over and over…
Graphics:
Oh my gosh, this game is frickin gorgeous. Maybe not 4k hdr, blah blah blah, but I have found myself stopping at the tops of hills to admire the view. I have put my horse on “auto-pilot” just so I could turn Henry’s head to watch as the areas changed with the lighting, or to admire the way the godrays and trees interplay with each other. Your gear gets visibly worn after combat which just feels right. And again, other than gear clipping and maybe a few visual oddities, I think the overall visual quality of the game is fantastic.
Audio:
Okay, so I like the soundtrack but it’s not super impressive, but the atmospheric sounds add a lot of immersion, and hearing distinctly which direction voices are coming from make navigating to a sound very simple. Horses trudging through water makes a believable splash/squish sound, and listening to a stream flowing is oddly peaceful. I’ve been playing with a headset, and it definitely improves the audio presentation.
Combat
So here’s the thing, your character is the son of a blacksmith. He has never had any sword training and this is reflected in the early hours of the game. NPCs you encounter will whoop you, because they are more “experience” ie have much higher stats. The directional combat, matched with the block/timed block/parry system is a lot to take in and figure out. Pair that with the different weapon classes designed for particularly armored enemies, and you’ll likely get annoyed before getting the hang of it. It’s not until about 2.5-3 ish hours that you get a proper tutorial and even then, it’s really hard to master. Combat against one opponent grows into a lot of fun, but any more than that and it becomes frustrating and tedious. Oh yeah, btw I hate this games archery, I’m no good at it and it’s going to wait until a future play through.
Character Development
It’s fun, I like the perks, I like that bathing, dressing nice, maintaining your gear, eating, and sleeping, all interplay to dictate how people react to you. Gathering plants levels the appropriate skill and every so many levels (per that skill) you get a perk. This perk can be anything from increasing your strength each time you harvest something because you’re constantly squatting, to increasing herb’s sell value by 15% Want to be better with your horse, ride him. Want to become a sword master, use your sword.
Immersion
Besides a few oddities this game is very fun and immersive. Remembering to eat, bathe, and sleep feel less like a chore than in other games. The ambient audio does a good job at engaging you and when you’re wandering to your next destination, it can be downright captivating. I actually really enjoy the forced first person mode in this game and found it funny when I put on a helmet with a face guard that closed upon entering combat and it actually changed how I saw the surrounding areas. The only thing that really brings me out of it is the odd third person conversations that seem to be there, simply to remind you of how fugly Henry is in the first place.

Keep in mind that this game was made by indie developers without huge budget and early access. I think this is marvelous.

The only thing that I don’t like in that game is that it’s in first person. I’m not a fan of Skyrim and KC:D reminded me of that with the first person thing. I heard it has some problems with how it runs on some systems but people also say that the game is amazing.

katsuo For me, almost all performance issues as far as stability and fps are concerned went away when I dropped my shader setting to medium. I’ve heard a lot of other issues performance wise, but have not really suffered them myself.

katsuo I honestly could not see the game as anything but First Person it would suck doing combat in third person.

sir_diealot What about The Witcher series? Is combat there sucks? Or Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor?

artem Not to try and answer for Sir, but from my own experience, while I loved the combat in the witcher 3, it was far more…simple, for lack of a better word. It had multiple systems and a few varying attack styles, but it’s systems complimented each other, and worked well in third person. KC:D’s combat is directional based and blocking/parrying/etc, sometimes requires you knowing from which direction your enemies attacks are coming, in order to best counter them. And it just seems easier to have this done from a first person perspective.

Also on your earlier comment about this game being made by indie devs; I was wholeheartedly, NOT trying to bash in any way, I think KC:D is amazing, let alone coming from a small indie studio. Those guys should be extremely proud of their game, and once a few patches roll out and hopefully fix more problems than they introduce (Stares coldly at imaginary Bethesda employee) I think it’s a definite GoTY nominee.

Thanks for your review! I didn’t realize that this game would play into all my interests so much until I read this!

I’ll sure move it up on my list!

This game looked really cool at PSX.

I need to pick it up at some point, I like the old school RPG make up of learning skills by using them.

artem From all I have watched on videos on this (I have watched all in English since the Kickstarter) is there are a lot more fast movement, parrying, dodging and the way swordplay is, I think that because of that you would not have time to react to blows and to counter in third person.

The only thing I can compare it to is racing games, if I try to race from behind the car which I consider third person I am horrible at it, but if I race from in the car it gives me more time to react because I can see things coming faster and react better to them. I still suck at that but at least I suck at them with finesse.

I can vouch that the game is pretty damn amazing. Picked it up a couple days ago and really getting into it. Combat is taking getting used to but loving the story and definitely the scenery. Beautiful game

Some day I’ll pick it up. I want to beat a few games first, then I can get it on sale and all will be well in the universe.

I’ll keep this on my list for now, but babysitting meters and needing to find a bed to save sounds annoying as fuck. I’ll give it two hours to not be shit…provided new info is not brought to light that causes me to remove it from my list before I try to play it.

I’ve heard there’s a save anywhere mod, plus a bunch of other mods to make the game less shit. Hopefully all the jank is patched out before it gets to the top of my list.

My friend was saying it crashes a ton for him.

Will probably be like that for a while. Glad I have about a years worth of titles to go through before I get to it.

teh_g I’ve yet to have a single crash. I get random temp locks, which drive me nuts, but it’s not terrible. Also gord0, mods are very nice to iron out some of the issues, like saving and archery crosshair.

That’s the worst bit. There’s no common issues, just random jank on random hardware. If it were the same issue on the same hardware, it would be easy to fix.

I have had zero lock ups and zero crashes, as for saving, I just run into a house upstairs not seen and “borrow” a bed to sleep to save quick. And with fast travel it really isn’t much of an inconvenience.

Performance is shit, killing my 1070. Using high preset at 1080p, but the fps drops are so massive, sometimes taking seconds to continue. Or just simply freezes out, already happened several times. Or the quest is just bugged. Or the messy horse riding. Or the awkward camera positions during conversations. And even after all of that I want to continue playing it, this is maybe the only existing game where the hungarians are the bad guys and it is wierd hearing those lines and understanding it when everybody else speaks english
